Admissions - Elementary School

Applications for all elementary grades are available beginning in September, but we encourage families considering application to contact us at any time of year, to learn more about our approach to teaching and learning and about our welcoming and inclusive Jewish community. We're also happy to talk to parents of younger children who may be looking ahead as they plan their family's education choices.

We offer group tours throughout the school year of both our East Side and West Side campuses. The East Side campus, located at the Park Avenue Synagogue, houses our kindergartners and first graders. Our second through eighth graders learn at the West Side campus, located at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism. In addition, interested families are invited to an informational open house in the fall, as well as to informal evenings in the homes of Schechter Manhattan families throughout Manhattan and Riverdale.

Click here for more information on school tours.

After we receive your completed application (which includes the application form, a copy of your child’s birth certificate and the non-refundable $75 application fee), we will send you a package with a confidential school report, to be filled out and returned to Solomon Schechter by the child’s present teacher; a date for an parent interview; a date for your child's play-group visit; and tuition-setting materials.

Assessment for admissions includes the Early Childhood Entrance Exam, administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB).  You can contact ERB at www.erbtest.org or by calling (212) 672-9800.  The school code for the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan is 336581.

If your child is applying to grade 1-5 you must submit school transcripts and/or evaluation results from his or her previous two years of schooling, as well as the results of the ERB evaluation, to be administered through the Educational Records Bureau.

As an ISAAGNY (Independent School Admissions Association of Greater New York) member school, we follow the citywide dates for admissions notification and replies.

Completion of an application does not guarantee an offer of admission.

To learn more, or to request an application, please contact our Admissions Office at (212) 427-9500 ext:23 or admissions@sssm.org.

Every parent has his or her own unique reasons for selecting a school. In the article below, Lisa Gordis tells us why she and her husband chose Schechter Manhattan for their child. Lisa, currently Associate professor of English at Barnard College and her husband, Aaron Saiger, Associate Professor of Law at Fordham University, are the parents of sixth grader, Yael and first grader, Hannah.

How does a parent know that a school is the right one? For me, the first indication was Schechter Manhattan’s tefilah curriculum. From kindergarten on, the children are asked to think seriously about God and about prayer. It seemed to me that taking five-year-olds seriously in the realm of theology suggested a real respect for their minds and souls. And when we visited, we saw the school’s heart as well. We saw children at home in their classrooms, working in small groups with teachers they clearly adored. We saw students working hard in math and reading, but we also saw them laughing together and treating each other with kindness. And we overheard teachers telling each other enthusiastically about ideas their students had raised that morning in discussion. Our daughter Yael picked up on it right away. She wanted this to be her school.

Schechter Manhattan has been a wonderful place for her. Her classrooms have been challenging places where her mind has been opened to the joys of chemistry and earth science, Torah study and creative writing. They’ve also been caring communities, where job charts include responsibilities like going to the office to phone children who are home sick to see how they’re feeling. Last year, Yael announced to us, “I’m very excited every day about going to school.” And it’s exciting for us to watch her learn and grow, learning confidence and independence along with new skills and new ideas.
